HSW's Green Initiative

HSW maintains and promotes an internal environmental awareness / stewardship program which is managed by HSW's Green Committee. This group is tasked with increasing awareness of environmental impacts associated with daily work practices and assists in identifying environmentally friendly alternatives.  HSW has implemented several measures including:

REDUCE

  • Employees have activated the sleep setting on idle monitors and PCs.  The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates this action can save up to $75 per computer in annual power costs.
  • Many employees use desk lamps or natural lighting instead of the overhead lights in their office.
  • The office building AC is controlled with a programmable thermostat.
  • Our building receives an Energy-Star conservation audit annually.
  • Office lights are censored to shut off if employees are away from their office for more than 15 minutes.
  • Several office forms and communications are available and distributed electronically instead of in printed form.
  • Employees are strongly encouraged to print only when necessary.
  • The default printer setting for all computers is double-sided, black and white.
  • Electronic versions of both draft and final project deliverables are available to clients for their use to reduce printing and copying / material costs.

RECYCLE

  • The Committee continually works to grow the list of recyclable items.
  • Recycling bins are available for paper and cardboard. The EPA has found that recycling causes 35% less water pollution and 74% less air pollution than making virgin paper.
  • A recycle bin is available for all types of batteries.
  • Aluminum is picked up once a month. Recycling scrap aluminum requires only 5% of the energy used to make new aluminum.
  • Recycling of additional items ( i.e., glass, metal, and plastic) are being evaluated.

REUSE

  • HSW purchases office supplies made from recycled materials were appropriate.  This includes buying products that are made to last longer or reusing items to keep them out of the landfill.  Reusing materials saves money, energy, and natural resources.
