HSW's Green Initiative
HSW maintains and promotes an internal environmental awareness / stewardship program which is managed by HSW's Green Committee. This group is tasked with increasing awareness of environmental impacts associated with daily work practices and assists in identifying environmentally friendly alternatives.
HSW has implemented several measures so far including:
Conservation: Reduce Electricity Consumption
-
Employees have activated the sleep settings on idle monitors and PCs. The US EPA estimates this action can save up to $75 per computer in annual power costs.
-
Many employees use desk lamps or natural lighting instead of the overhead lights in their office.
-
Our building recently received an Energy-Star conservation audit.
-
Employees are encouraged to turn off their lights if they are away from their office for more than 15 minutes.
Conservation: Printing
- Several office forms and communications are available and distributed electronically instead of in printed form.
- Employees are strongly encouraged to print only when necessary and to print double-sided whenever possible.
- Electronic versions of both draft and final project deliverables are available to clients for their use to reduce printing and copying / material costs.
Recycling
The Committee continually works to grow the list of recyclable items.
- Recycling bins are available for paper and cardboard.
- A recycle bin is available for all types of batteries.
- Aluminum is picked up once a month.
- Recycling of additional items ( i.e., glass, metal, and plastic) are being evaluated.
Conservation: Reuse
HSW purchases office supplies made from recycled materials were appropriate. This includes buying products that are made to last longer or reusing items to keep them out of the landfill.
Posters
Periodic notices are distributed with "green" ideas for implementation.
