Water Conservation Measures

HSW Engineering, Inc. was contracted in 2000 to provide consulting services concerning opportunities for implementing water conservation measures for agricultural water users in areas of the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) where shortfalls in water are expected within the next 20 years.  The project involved establishing a database of current water use practices and available water use practices and estimating the potential savings of installing and operating more efficient irrigation systems.  In addition, alternative water supplies, such as runoff and surficial aquifer water were also investigated.  Ultimately, projects were proposed and compared with other projects investigated (such as desalination) to determine which projects offered the greatest potential for water savings.  This report was updated again in 2004.

In 2008, HSW managed the update of economic and water savings data associated with irrigation best management practices (BMP) for the SWFWMD Facilitating Agricultural Resource Management Systems (FARMS) program.  Unit costs for various components of irrigation systems and BMPs were updated.  Characterizations of farm size, water use, and irrigation for typical blueberry farms were prepared.
